Let me paint you a picture. It’s sometime in the mid-80s. I’m on the living room carpet surrounded by a box of mishmash Hot Wheels cars — F1 cars, a couple of Mini Metros, and about forty other vehicles I couldn’t tell you the make of. The Scalextric track is set up. Life is good.Fast forward to now. I’m 40-something, I’ve got a shelf full of LEGO and a Darth Vader helmet judging my life choices from across the room. And I’ve just ordered the LEGO Speed Champions Back to the Future DeLorean (77256).Some things never change. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
How Did We Get Here?
I’ll be straight with you — I wasn’t particularly aware of the LEGO Speed Champions range until recently. I knew it existed, vaguely, in the way you know things exist when they’re not quite on your radar yet.
Then I saw the DeLorean.
Back to the Future was one of those films I wore out on VHS as a kid. Home video, rainy Saturday afternoon, repeat viewings until I basically had the script memorised. The DeLorean wasn’t just a car — it was the car. The most exciting vehicle in fiction. And now LEGO have gone and made a Speed Champions version of it for £22.99.
I didn’t stand a chance.
What Is LEGO Speed Champions?
If you’re new to the range — welcome, your wallet is about to suffer — Speed Champions is LEGO’s line of officially licensed vehicle sets aimed at car fans of all ages.The key thing that makes Speed Champions special is the price point. Most sets come in at between £20 and £30, which makes them genuinely accessible and — dangerously — very easy to collect. They’re also beautifully detailed for their size, with each car built to the same 8-stud wide format so they look great displayed together.Think of it as the Hot Wheels of the adult LEGO world. Except you build them yourself, which is the whole point.
The Back to the Future DeLorean (77256) — Why I Had To Have It
Right, let’s talk about the actual set.

Price: £22.99 (currently available for less on Amazon)
Minifigures: Doc Brown and Marty McFly — both included
That last point is worth emphasising. Two minifigures in a Speed Champions set at this price is exceptional value. You get Marty in his iconic red puffy vest and Doc Brown in all his wild-haired glory. Both have two facial expressions to choose from. The attention to detail is genuinely impressive.
But here’s what really sold me — this set can be built two ways.
Version 1: The original 1985 DeLorean, complete with the lightning rod and the California “OUTATIME” number plate. This is the one I’m building first. The one from the film. The one that makes you want to immediately rewatch the whole trilogy.
Version 2: The flying version from Back to the Future Part II, with Mr Fusion, an orange barcode number plate, and the sideways wheels. Because where they’re going, they don’t need roads.
Both versions include the flux capacitor, rear air vents, the cockpit and the time calculator. The flux capacitor is actually printed on the brick rather than a sticker, which is the kind of detail that makes you appreciate how much thought has gone into this.

One of the most recognisable custom cars ever built, and now it’s in Speed Champions form. Ken Block’s legendary Hoonicorn is a riot of colour, attitude and motorsport history. If you know, you know. If you don’t — look it up and thank me later.

Two Lamborghinis for the price of one Speed Champions set. The Revuelto in its iconic Lamborghini orange and the Huracán STO in electric blue. Brilliant value and they look incredible displayed side by side. This one regularly goes on sale on Amazon so worth keeping an eye on.

The One I Want LEGO to Make Next
Right, while I’ve got you — can we talk about the glaring gap in the Speed Champions movie car lineup?
Ghostbusters Ecto-1.
I mean, come on. The DeLorean is in. Lightning McQueen is in. The Fast & Furious Supra is in. The Ecto-1 is the most iconic vehicle from one of the greatest films of the 1980s and it is crying out for the Speed Champions treatment.
LEGO already know the Ghostbusters licence — they’ve done the brilliant Creator Expert Ecto-1 (10274) for adult builders, which is a stunning large scale model with working steering, a ghost trap trapdoor and an extending gunner seat. That set is brilliant. But a Speed Champions Ecto-1 at £22.99 with Peter Venkman and Ray Stantz minifigures? That would be an instant buy for basically every adult who grew up in the 80s.

Why Speed Champions Is Perfect for Adults Who Grew Up With Hot Wheels
Here’s the thing about Speed Champions that I don’t think gets said enough — these sets scratch exactly the same itch as Hot Wheels and Scalextric did when we were kids.
The collecting instinct. The satisfying weight of a well-made car in your hand. The way certain vehicles just mean something because of where they came from — a film you loved, a race you watched, a car you dreamed about.
The difference is that now you get to build them yourself. And they look extraordinary on a shelf.
At £20-£25 a set they’re also genuinely affordable — the most accessible entry point into adult LEGO by some distance. You don’t need a spare shelf the size of a small car park. You don’t need to remortgage anything. You just need to pick a car that means something to you and build it.
For me that was always going to be the DeLorean. Delivery can’t come soon enough.
